Uncovering the Hidden Signs: How to Tell if You Have Impaired Thyroid Function

Impaired thyroid function

The thyroid is an important gland located at the front of the neck and is responsible for making and storing hormones. The thyroid can control energy levels, body weight and metabolic function within the body.

Low thyroid function (hypothyroid)

Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) can affect the levels of female hormones in the body. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, and when the gland is not producing enough of these hormones, it can disrupt the balance of estrogen and progesterone in the body. This can lead to hormonal symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, heavy or light periods, and infertility. Additionally, hypothyroidism can cause weight gain, fatigue, and depression, which can also affect hormone levels and overall reproductive health. It’s important to note that the relationship between thyroid function and hormones is a complex one, and many factors can influence it.

High thyroid function (hyperthyroid)

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the reverse happens, the body produces too much thyroid hormone which causes overactive metabolic function and different effects on the body. Hyperthyroidism is less common that hypothyroidism. Hight thyroid function can affect the menstrual cycle and contribute to irregular menstruation, heavy or light menses, or complete absence of menstrual periods. High thyroid function can also reduce fertility and increase the chances of miscarriage. Hyperthyroidism can also affect female hormone levels in the body, particularly estrogen and progesterone levels. Changes in these two hormones can cause symptoms such as vaginal dryness, night sweats and hot flashes.
