White and Red Moon Cycles

What is a moon cycle

Moon cycle is the term that can be used to describe the female menstrual cycle. Normal menstrual cycle length can range from 21-35 days in length. The average menstrual cycle length is around 29 days, which coincidentally lines up with the lunar cycle which is also 29 days in length. Women have an affinity for the moon, and the lunar energy and cycle is often representative of feminine qualities such as receptivity, changeable and cyclical.

Moon Cycle Phases

The 4 phases of the moon cycle also correlate to the 4 phases of the menstrual cycle. Traditionally the new moon phase was the more inward time where menstruation would occur, and the full moon phase was the time where ovulation occurred, and people were more active at night.

  1. Menstruation/ New moon/ Sage/ Winter
  2. Follicular phase/ pre ovulatory/ waxing moon/ spring/ virgin
  3. Ovulation phase/ full moon/ summer/ mother
  4. Luteal phase/ pre- menstrual phase/ waning moon/ autumn/ enchantress

Charting Your Cycle

The first step in identifying which cycle you have is to track your cycle. Day 1 of the cycle is the first day of a proper bleed (bright red blood, decent flow- not scanty/ spotting). Knowing where you are at in your cycle allows you to tap into the strengths of each phase and be aware of the weaknesses of each phase. You can use your cycle to optimise your life and live more in tune with your body’s natural rhythms.

White Moon Cycle

During the white moon cycle a woman bleeds during the new moon and ovulated during the full moon. This cycle is the most common and traditional type of moon cycle. Energy is focused OUTWARD, away from the woman.

The full moon is a time of natural fertility, and indicates the woman is in the mother stage of her life, focused on starting a family, and energy is nurturing and caring for others like her husband, family, children. This can also mean taking more time to focus energy on ‘birthing’ new projects, ideas, passions, and hobbies. Fertility doesn’t necessarily need to be exclusive to just pregnancy and starting a family. This type of fertile mother energy can be channelled into any area of our life.

Red Moon Cycle

red moon cycle

During the red moon cycle a woman bleeds around the full moon and ovulates around the new moon. This type of moon cycle is less common. Energy is focused INWARD toward the woman.

With this type of moon cycle the woman is focused on empowering and helping themselves and women/ people around them. Women on this cycle were traditionally the healers, medicine women, and priestesses, midwives and doulas. Women on this cycle have a deep inner power and are very attuned to their sexual energy and power. These women may still have children and families, but their energy is usually more directed toward business, development, growth and self development.

Final thoughts

Neither cycle is better than the other. It is normal for our cycle to change during different phases of our life. Sometimes it may be a red moon cycle, other times a white moon cycle, and sometimes in between. I love to pay attention to where my cycle falls, and tune into the qualities that type of moon cycle brings. Its nice to reflect on how my moon cycle feels relevant for what’s going on in my life at that time.
